Beginning Birding: Plumage Cycles
w. Seth Chapman

Join Seth Chapman, Apothecary Coordinator and experienced birder, on a birdwatching hike through Kleinstuck Preserve.

This month, before we hit the trails, we gather to learn about a fascinating trait that is unique to birds; that of feather molt. What is feather molt, and what is its purpose? Even a basic understanding of the molting process can be very useful in birding.

During our exploration of Kleinstuck, we will attune to our surroundings, looking and listening to the many species of birds which grace our presence. What can we learn by observing our feathered fiends? In contemplation, we will deepen our understanding of ourselves, and the environment around us.

Come to hike in community, sharpen your identification skills, build your life list, and expand your bird knowledge! All skill levels welcome.

Birders 10 and under are welcome to attend free of charge. Registration covers one adult, and individual registrations are not sharable between two or more individuals.

Please bring a pair of binoculars and a travel mug for complementary chai.

Hike length: 1.5 mi, easy difficulty

This hike takes place Saturday, August 12 from 8:00a-9:30a ET.

Seth's Yoga + Āyurveda journey began over a decade ago after attending a yoga class in Kalamazoo. He is a life-long learner with a passion for nature, and an interest in learning new skills. He is now the Apothecary Coordinator here at the Āyurvedic Wellness Center.

Seth has a lifelong passion for birds, and loves sharing his enthusiasm of the bird world with those around him. His interest in birds led him to begin his life list at the age of 10. Seth also volunteers at a local nature center where he monitors nestboxes, as well as volunteers at a bird banding station.
