Beginning Birding: Trekking for Timberdoodles (in-person)
w. Seth Chapman

The American Woodcock, aka Timberdoodle, is a secretive, superbly camouflaged shorebird that spends most of their time hidden in forest scrub, not often seen by birders. To our delight, during a short window in the spring, male Woodcocks emerge from the forest to perform a marvelous flight display, or “sky dance”.

Join experienced birder, Seth Chapman, for a short hike where we will witness the magical mating display of the American Woodcock. After this hike, you will have a deeper understanding of the Woodcock, and perhaps, a deeper understanding of yourself, as we contemplate this spectacle.

This hike will take place at dusk at Chipman Preserve. We will gather together in community, and learn all about the Woodcock; how to identify them, their various habits, and unique characteristics that make this bird so special.

All skill levels are welcome. Registration covers one adult. Birders 10 and under are welcome to attend free of charge. This hike will take place rain or shine.

Please bring a pair of binoculars, and a travel mug for complementary chai.

The preserve does not have a physical address. The approximate street address is 8400 East Main Street, Kalamazoo, MI 49053.

Trail: An easy, 1.5 mi hike through restored prairie and oak savannah.

Investment: $20
