Birding Basics: Mindfulness + Birding
w. Seth Chapman

In this month’s Birding Basics class, we will discuss how to combine birding and nature discovery with mindfulness practices. Being present in the moment is an essential aspect of mindfulness, and it can help us connect better with nature and improve our overall well-being, and thus, the well-being of the world at large.

In this discussion, we will incorporate the teachings of Yoga and Ayurveda into our birding experience, so that we may simultaneously hone and enhance our natural birding skills and develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and our environment.

This class discusses the intersection of mindfulness and birding, and thus, is appropriate for birders and yogis/seekers alike. Upon completion of this class you will:

  • Have a better understanding of the importance of conserving our natural environments

  • Be able to go birding in a way that inspires joy, clarity, and connection

  • Have a mindfulness practice to become conscious of your inner nature while birding

  • Know what it means to practice and promote respectful, enjoyable, and thoughtful birding

These classes are a great support for birding hikes, which take place in Kleinstuck Preserve during the warmer months.

Seth has a lifelong passion for birds, and loves sharing his enthusiasm of the bird world with those around him. His interest in birds led him to begin his life list at the age of 10. Seth also volunteers at a local nature center where he monitors nestboxes, as well as volunteers at a bird banding station.
